Snow Removal Guide
When It Snows
The University Public Safety Department determines when the Landscape Department snow crew reports to work. In inclement weather the department usually reports to work when 1-2 inches of snow has fallen or icing conditions occur. Snow plow operators concentrate on keeping the major sidewalks, fire lanes, handicap, faculty, staff, and student parking lots clear. These areas are cleared down to bare pavement as soon as possible, during and after a snow fall. A mixture of sand and de-icer is used when necessary to improve traction on pavement.

The Facilities Work Order Control telephone numbers are 486-3113 and 486-3114, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Who Else Clears Snow
The State Department of Transportation clears Route 195, Route 275, Route 433, Coventry Road, King Hill Road, Hillside Road, Stadium Road, Mansfield Road, Glenbrook Road, Gilbert Road, Horsebarn Hill Road, and Bolton Road.
- The Town of Mansfield plows the town roads surrounding the campus.
- Facilities Operations uses Capital Cleaning (486-5778) to shovel all doorways and stairs on campus.
What You Can Expect When It Snows
Please be patient! Sidewalks and parking lots are plowed on a priority basis. UCONN has over 50 miles of sidewalks, roads, and lots to be taken care of during a storm. We work as fast as we can to deliver a safe and complete job. We do our best to remove snow around cars and provide a travel lane in all lots.
UCONN Landscape Action Plan
- Patrol area at the start of the snowfall.
- Spot de-icing of walks and roadways, along with plowing.
- Full scale de-icing of all major walks, along with plowing.
- Plowing of all major walks, roads, and parking lots.
- Continuous sanding of walkways and driving lanes.
Plowing and How You Can Help
All of our snow removal equipment is equipped with warning flashers and backup alarms. However, it is extremely difficult for the operators to see pedestrians while operating equipment. Please try to allow us as much space as possible between you and the equipment. Do not hesitate to ask an operator where to park to better assist them in the snow removal. Follow all rules in regards to the parking ban, as this will assist us in clearing the lots properly and providing the best conditions when you park.
Emergencies
We are not allowed to tow vehicles that have gone off the road due to insurance issues. We will be glad to get in contact with Public Safety to assist you. Call Public Safety at 911 in life threatening emergencies only. The Police and Fire Departments will contact Grounds if an emergency vehicle needs assistance to maneuver on a snow or ice covered street.
Helpful Hints
- A road or sidewalk that had been sanded is safer than one not sanded, so please allow the trucks to finish sanding or use an alternate route.
- Do not pull out or walk in front or behind of trucks or other equipment.
- Allow at least 50 feet between you and the equipment.
- Be prepared with proper foot attire for all conditions.
- Other questions or issues? Please call 486-2306, 486-0097, 486-5528, 486-3591 or e-mail: John.Decker@uconn.edu.
